In the past 20 years Hainan Island has re-invented itself from remote backwater into China's tropical beach paradise, with some of the most expensive real-estate in China. However, this development has been focused mostly in capital Haikou, and on the southern coast around Sanya, and much of the island's northern coast and rural interior lags far behind economically. One such area Chengmai is close enough to Haikou to lure coach tours, but any tourism potential in the region has not been widely documented. Chengmai's local government comissioned several photographers to explore what their county had to offer beyond a beach (e.g folk dances, temples, coffee plantations and local cuisine)
